A Note from the Founder of S.A.N.I.T.Y.
As a stay at home mother I had the good fortune to be able to spend much time with my grandfather and his wife. Some time ago it had come to my attention that they are being penalised for their age. The technology that our younger generation take for granted because they grew up with it has placed my grandparents in a difficult position. As big businesses move forward and embrace technology, some generations are being left behind. Companies are charging extra if you can’t pay your bills online. Now even banks are charging you to walk through their doors just to deal with a human being. Recently my phone company explained that every bill I was to receive on paper from then on would be charged at an extra $3.00 and to avoid such a fee I should request e billing… DISGUSTING! All these little extra fees can add up to a large amount for anybody, but our senior community seems to be being held to ransom because they don’t know how to change.
On day my grandfather put the paper down and said to me “I can’t even read the paper any more… What’s a ‘Blog’ What’s ‘Bluetooth’? I don’t understand what these articles are about. Is this English?’
This distressed me greatly. He had seen so many things come and grow over his lifetime, and he had taken everything in his stride. All of a sudden the language had changed on him. My fear was that at 98 if you start feeling disconnected to the world you live in, where is the motivation to stay in that world.
As a matter of principal I set about teaching those seniors close to me how to navigate their way around on a computer. I started by showing my 98 yr old grandfather how to turn a computer on.
Something quite incredible came from this little experiment. As their knowledge developed from nothing so did their independence! As their capabilities grew so did their general confidence. My grandparents began boasting about their newfound understanding and so their friends began contacting me. They complained that their family members did not have the time to teach them, or worse they would always end up fighting, as the ‘youngsters’ could not understand why they were not picking things up fast enough or at all.
In my “previous life” (before babies) I was lucky enough to be a specialised teacher. I have spent many years being trained to teach people according to their individual learning styles and needs. I have travelled the world attending seminars and learning various teaching techniques to ensure success. Although my training covered all levels it was working with beginners that I found my niche. I enjoy a personal feeling of achievement when a client becomes self-sufficient. There is a trust and bond between teacher and client that unique. Times have changed from the teacher-focused method of teaching to a much more student-centered style. It is my true belief that if someone is not learning it’s because someone is not teaching!
I have been able to adapt my teaching style to feature senior specific requirements, incorporating appropriate lesson speed and repetition to achieve the desired results. I now have many years of experience specialising with seniors and guiding them to success.
It is my personal aim to empower everybody’s grandparent with the knowledge and confidence to try something new. I strive to put an end to people being taken advantage of and having to wait for someone else to help him or her. I want to make it possible for them to start helping themselves!
There are opportunities that are being missed out on because of the fear of the unknown. A lifestyle of constant accessibility and ease. The only way to access this gift is to take the first step and it has been my honor to hold their hand.
